Atlanta Skylights – Custom Skylight Installs

Living Room Skylights | Atlanta Skylights

There are several things to consider when thinking about adding a skylight to your home. The first would be location. Where do we place a skylight? It's a good question, because experts agree you'll want to take the most advantage of the sun without changing your mind a week later. If your home faces north, for example, you'll want to take that into consideration as most north-facing homes already enjoy plenty of light. So, a rear room or loft area would make more sense in this type of home so areas that have less natural light can prosper.

Secondly, you'll want to consider the styling of the skylight - there are several types of skylights and each has it's own unique and beneficial qualities. Electric skylights can open and close with the touch of a button, and tube skylights (often called sun tunnels) are a unique and cost-effective way of adding light. With over 22 years of experience installing skylights in metro Atlanta, we can help you decide on what works best for your home.

What to Expect During a Skylight Installation

A skylight installation is comprised of two major steps: rooftop and interior. Depending on the conditions such as roof pitch, interior light shaft depth, shape and weather, installations can take anywhere from a half-day up to three days or more.

Step one of the installation includes cutting the hole in the roof and fastening the skylight to the roof with the three layers of protection found in VELUX No Leak Skylights. It typically takes about a half day per skylight to complete the interior portion of the installation, which includes drywall and painting. The type of ceiling in your home will also affect the amount of time it takes to complete the interior phase of the installation. Flat ceilings usually require more drywall work than vaulted ceilings. Your installer will paint the light shaft to match the surrounding ceiling area.

Installers will make every effort to protect your home’s interior from dust and other installation debris. Often they will construct a curtain of plastic sheeting around the space in your ceiling where the skylight will be installed to contain dust.
